SmartMuseum wins in World Summit Award Mobile
Melon Mobile's project recognized in m-Tourism & Culture category
Melon Mobile’s museum guide application, SmartMuseum, is among the winners at the World Summit Award Mobile 2010 (WSA), a competition within the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society.

With SmartMuseum visitors of museums and tourist sites can register via their mobile devices and receive comprehensive and multilingual audio-video information about the visited site. To do this, the app uses on-site databases, global digital libraries and the experience of other visitors. SmartMuseum is among the five winners in the category m-Tourism & Culture (“m” stands for mobile).

SmartMuseum was developed as a European project supported within the IST priority of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. WebGate, now Melon Mobile, was a core technology partner, responsible for the Symbian development of the custom solution. The company worked in collaboration with Heritage Malta, Institute and Museum of the History of Science (Italy), Aalto University School of Science and Technology (Finland), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control, ELIKO (Estonia) and Apprise (Estonia).

The WSA mobile awards pick the most outstanding content in eight categories: m-Business, m-Government, m-Health, m-Learning, m-Media, m-Entertainment, m-Tourism and m-Inclusion. The software developers from India and the United States were distinguished in the biggest number of categories, being among the winners in four of them. Russia and Germany follow, having won in three categories.

In each of the eight categories, a grand jury of global experts selected five winners. These winners were singled out through a multi-step evaluation process from a total of 420 products entered in the contest from nearly 100 UN member states. After the nomination of the national finalists, WSA’s Grand Jury of 20 internationally recognized experts selected the global winners.

“The jury was highly responsive to cultural differences and they worked to award [visibly] great m-content, no matter whether it originated in Canada or Mexico, Guatemala or Slovenia,” says Prof. Peter A. Bruck, WSA Chairman.

All winners will be officially awarded at the Abu Dhabi Gala that will take place in the emirate on December 6th, 2010. Among the ceremony’s keynote speakers will be Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, CTO of Deutsche Telekom, James H. Poisant, Secretary General of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) and Jānis Kārkliņš ,Assistant Director-General for Communication & Information Sector, UNESCO.
